You will also learn how mount the file shares at boot. This allows you to avoid typing your credentials, as well as avoiding the use of the mount command when you turn on the system. With CIFS-UTILS you will be able to easily access files from a SMB share on your network. I will be using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS throughout this tutorial. This is a program that allows you to easily mount different file shares on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linux\">Linux<\/a>. For security reasons you only want root to be able to read and write the file. Enter the command below to apply the changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><code>sudo chown root: .creds &amp;&amp; sudo chmod 600 .creds<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mount the SMB Share<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"639\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/formatswap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9-mount-share-1024x639.jpg\" alt=\"mount smb share\" class=\"wp-image-593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/formatswap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9-mount-share-1024x639.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/formatswap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9-mount-share-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/formatswap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9-mount-share-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/formatswap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9-mount-share-1536x959.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/formatswap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9-mount-share.jpg 1603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally you will mount the SMB network share. Enter the below cifs mount command replacing the credential directory, IP address, mount location, and share name with your own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><code>sudo mount -t cifs -o credentials=\/home\/USERNAME\/.creds,dir_mode=0755,file_mode=0755 \/\/IPADDRESS\/ShareName \/mnt\/Share\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>After you run the command you can navigate to the mount folder to view the network share that you have added. You have now successfully mounted a SMB network share using cifs-utils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Auto Mounting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you only use the <strong>mount<\/strong> command, your network share will no longer be mounted when you reboot. We will edit the fstab file and add a few entries. This is the file that defines what file systems are mounted at boot.
